What is Breast Augmentation/Breast Enlargement Surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery also termed breast enlargement or breast implants, is a procedure that helps improve the size as well as the shape of the breasts. It involves placing implants either under the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle.
Diagnosis and Procedure of Breast Augmentation/Breast Enlargement Surgery
Diagnosis
Before breast augmentation surgery, we perform a comprehensive evaluation to ensure the procedure is appropriate and safe for the patient.
Our breast enlargement doctor, Dr Anirban Ghosh, will review your medical history, including past surgeries, current health conditions and medications. A thorough examination of the breasts is conducted, including an assessment of breast tissue, chest wall and overall health.
You will discuss your desired outcomes, such as size, shape and projection of the breasts. Options between silicone and saline implants, as well as other details like implant size and placement, will be discussed with you at our breast enlargement clinic.
For women over a certain age or those with a family history of breast cancer, a mammogram may be recommended before surgery. A breast ultrasound or MRI is also used for further evaluation, especially if there are concerns about existing breast conditions.
Procedure
The breast augmentation procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia to ensure you are unconscious and pain-free throughout the surgery.
Incisions are made in one of the following locations:
Inframammary Fold: Under the breast, where the scar is less visible.
Periareolar: Around the nipple, which can also help with camouflage.
Transaxillary: In the armpit, which avoids scarring on the breast itself.
Transumbilical: An incision in the belly button (less common).
The surgeon then creates a pocket in the breast tissue or chest muscle for the implant. The implant will be inserted into the pocket. Saline implants are inserted empty and later filled with saline solution. For silicone implants, they are pre-filled and placed as is.
The incisions are closed with sutures, which may be dissolvable or need removal later. A sterile dressing or bandage is applied to the area.
